There are many aspects on how acupuncture works to achieve healing. It is important to understand the basic TCM theory in order to fully comprehend this. In general, the body has many pathways, called Meridians, through which the vital energy, or Qi (pronounced chee) flows. These meridians have set routes and the Qi flows through them in set patterns. When the flow of Qi is obstructed, health problems arise. Acupuncture needles remove the obstructions and restore free flow.

Another important aspect is the balance of yin and yang.  The body achieves proper health when the Yin and Yang are at the proper levels in each of the twelve organ systems. Improper levels in one of more of the organ systems will result in health problems. Acupuncture, when applied properly, restores the proper Yin and Yang levels in the organs systems in the body.
