Acupuncture points are specific points along meridians where the body exchanges qi with the exterior environment. They were mapped over thousands of years by various practitioners of TCM. These acupuncture points are where the fine acupuncture needles are inserted to achieve healing by restoring the balance of yin and yang in the organ systems. Some points are more commonly used than others.
There are no anatomical or histological evidence of meridians and acupuncture points and for this reason, modern science is skeptical on the entire TCM system. This is the fundamental difference between Chinese or Eastern concepts and Western thinking. The former is based on functions and is therefore much more holistic, whereas the latter is based on form and is more symptomatic. Chinese medicine concepts were formed thousands of years prior to scientific concepts. It is no wonder that there are major inconsistencies between them. However, they are both valid and are merely different ways of looking at the extremely complex human body.
Since Chinese medicine is focused on functions, many health conditions or concepts not recognized and therefore not treatable in Western medicine are routinely and effectively treated in Chinese medicine. For example, we have successfully treated patients who experienced pain in the mid section of the body combined with shortness of breath. When they seeked help from their physicians (MD`s), there were no conclusive diagnosis. They were told there were nothing wrong with them and the symptoms were either dismissed as something imaginary, or given pain killers. The patients continued to experience the same symptoms. When the patients came to us for help, they were diagnosed with stagnation of liver qi, caused by emotional stress. The symptoms were relieved with only one acupuncture session to remove the liver stagnation. |
