Sinuses are cavities in the skull between the facial bones: the maxillary sinuses are inside the cheekbones and the frontal sinuses are above the eyes.  Ethmoidal and sphenoidal sinuses are smaller ones between the larger ones.  Sinuses are lined with antibody filled mucus which protects the respiratory passages from irritants and infections.

From a TCM (Traditional Chinese medicine) perspective, any respiratory problem is generally related to the Lung system, either as excessive heat or Qi deficiency.  It can also be combined with stagnation of Qi in the Gall Bladder, Dampness in the Spleen, or Blood stasis together with Heat.  Each of these conditions has different symptoms.  The practitioner must carefully diagnose the patient using the diagnostic techniques in order to achieve great efficacy.
