We have extensive experience in helping couples to have babies, even those with multiple failed attempts of IVF or IUI. The success stories cover the whole spectrum of natural conception, to IUI and IUF. In most cases, there were inherent issues with low sperm motility, morphology, PCOS and endometriosis. Infertility is common among couples in modern day society. The reasons are varied, but the contributing factors include high stress, age, abnormality in the reproduction system and others. Generally, it is defined as the inability to conceive after a year or more of regular sexual activity without using contraception. Primary infertility refers to a woman having never been able to conceive, while secondary infertility refers to the inability to conceive after a previous pregnancy after a year of regular intercourse without contraception. The percentage of women that are infertile goes up with age. In the US, the statistics are listed below, and the assumption is that they are similar in Canada.
AGE | INFERTILITY |
15 - 29 | 11% |
30 - 34 | 16.9% |
35 - 39 | 22.6% |
40 - 44 | 27.4% |
Western medicine looks at infertility from a more physiological perspective, which includes hormones, physical problems such as blocked fallopian tube, PCOS, endometriosis etc.. Their solutions include hormonal treatments, surgeries, IUI and IVF. While some women can benefit from these treatments, there is a large number of women who need additional help. For instance, we have treated numerous women who cannot conceive even after multiple attempts of IUI or IVF. Modern science cannot explain why. In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), the body is much more complex than sperms and egg, ovaries and uterus and hormones. The body knows if it is not ready to take on the responsibility of supporting an extra life and will not accept a fertilized egg even when it is artificially implemented into the uterus by IVF. This is where TCM shines. When applied properly, it will restore the body to health, where it will be able to accept the fertilized egg. We have great success in this regard, both for women with multiple failed IVF or IUI, or natural conception.
TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) recognizes infertility as a medical condition and was recorded as far back as 2BC in Suwen 素問 (The Book of Plain Questions). It states that if the Du Meridian, or the Governor Meridian of a woman is injured, she will be infertile. Throughout the various periods in China, the medical literature explored the different causes of infertility. They include Blood stagnation, overstraining resulting from uncontrolled diet, sexual activities or emotional stress, damage to the uterus resulting from invasion of the six Pathogens, prenatal factors, low Kidney Qi, weak Ren meridian, phlegm, dampness, irregular periods and the imbalance of Yin and Yang.
All of these areas are considered as valid causes and the treatments can be classified along these areas. In practice, the Kidney, Liver and Spleen systems need to be properly assessed for any deficiencies since these three systems are crucial for fertility. In addition, the Ren and Du meridians have to be tonified. Any weakness in the Qi and Blood will need to be addressed as well. More recent researches in acupuncture have discovered acupuncture points that are more directly related to the reproductive system and they are included appropriately. Ear acupuncture is used to enhance the results. As the general TCM approach in treating any condition, the patient is thoroughly examined and diagnosed using the time proven TCM diagnostic techniques. The results of the diagnosis will determine the proper course of treatment.
Since infertility is a complex and deeply rooted condition, regular treatments over several months are necessary. The length of time depends on how serious the deficiencies of Qi, Blood, Kidney, Liver, Spleen and Essence are. In our experience, it ranges from 1 to 7 months of weekly acupuncture treatments. When combined with herbs, the process can be sped up. As with treatment for any condition, the patient will need to follow the dietary advice in order to achieve optimal results.
